As a child, I had two little china figurines that someone gave me as a gift. One was a little girl and one was a little boy, and both were kneeling in prayer, hands together and eyes closed. That posture is the one we most associate with prayer, but it’s hardly the only one.
Sometimes standing in nature with our eyes wide open, Anne [of Green Gables]-style, is the best way to communicate with God. Many of us feel most open to God when we lie down to pray, or we find that God seems closest when we sketch or dance. We can do things with our bodies that make our souls feel more alive. These actions are worth exploring.
