“What good is it for the Christ
to be born two thousand years ago
if Christ is not born in you?”
Meister Eckhart would ask
of us in century twenty-one.
If I cannot enter into real fears:
rumors of a child’s illegitimacy,
dislocation of unfair taxation,
estrangement of a manger,
how can I celebrate the angel’s
announcement,
“Fear not!”?
How can I sing, “Glory to God in the highest!”
unless I share the pain of the lowest?
Only by working for justice and peace on earth
can I dare rejoice at this Savior’s birth.
